The Importance of Atmospheric Differential Refraction in Spectrophotometry
نویسنده
چکیده
The effects of atmospheric differential refraction on astronomical measurements are much more important than is generally assumed, In particular, it is shown that relative line and coritinuum intensities in spectrophotometric work may be erroneous if this phenomenon is neglected, To help observers minimize these errors, the relation between object position and optimal slit or aperture orientation is derived, and practical tables and graphs are presented for use at the telescope,

Implications of Atmospheric Differential Refraction for Adaptive Optics Observations
Many adaptive optics systems operate by measuring the distortion of the wavefront in one wavelength range and performing the scientific observations in a second, different wavelength range. One common technique is to measure wavefront distortions at wavelengths <∼1 μm while operating the science instrument at wavelengths>∼ 1 μm. The index of refraction of air decreases sharply from shorter visi...
متن کاملImpact of the Atmospheric Refraction on the Precise Astrometry with Adaptive Optics in Infrared
Context. We study the impact of the atmospheric differential chromatic refraction on the measurements and precision of relative astrometry. Specifically, we address the problem of measuring the separations of close pairs of binary stars with adaptive optics in the J and K bands. Aims. We investigate the influence of weather conditions, zenithal distance, star’s spectral type and observing wavel...
متن کاملRefraction at the Interface of a Lossy Metamaterial
The refraction phenomenon at the interface of an ordinary material and a lossy metamaterial has been investigated. For oblique incidence on the lossy metamaterial, the planes of constant amplitude of the refracted wave are parallel to the interface and the plane of constant phases make a real angle with the interface (real refraction angle). The real refraction angle and hence, the real refract...
متن کاملAtmospheric Refraction Path Integrals in Ground-Based Interferometry
The basic effect of the earth’s atmospheric refraction on telescope operation is the reduction of the true zenith angle to the apparent zenith angle, associated with prismatic aberrations due to the dispersion in air. If one attempts coherent superposition of star images in groundbased interferometry, one is in addition interested in the optical path length associated with the refracted rays. I...
متن کاملHeterodyne Dial Measurements of Atmospheric Co2 : Numerical Simulation and Experimental Results
A Heterodyne Differential Absorption Lidar (HDIAL) for monitoring atmospheric CO2 concentration is presented. The design of the lidar system is discussed including the 2.06-μm pulsed laser transmitter, heterodyne detection and signal processing. Moreover a numerical simulation in the time domain for HDIAL enables to evaluate the lidar performance for such measurements. Finally preliminary exper...
